Seminar 1 Class Notes and Presentation

Seminar 1 Notes:
  • Chapter 2:
    • All four approaches are introduced
    • Can you combine UCD and ACD
      • Our plan will likely be to use UCD since it’s the user’s experience we are trying to improve, and we aren’t quite sure what we want to build as the solution, so we will focus on the users.
  • Chapter 4:
    • All the details and rules of research will act as a guide
    • Hunt statement: “We are going to research how children interact with exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Stockholm so that we can help improve their interaction experience.”
    • Research techniques we will use:
      • Interviews for sure, but interviews will not get us enough information.
      • We need to observe kids. What are they doing at the museum? Are they actively participating? Do we need to talk to the parents and get permission?
      • Walk around and observe them interact?
      • Observe the anti-persona that we have targeted and how they interact with the exhibits.
      • Bring candy for the children we interview.
  • Chapter 5:
    • Define our persona: children
    • Analyzing data: get post-its and a room in the library and brainstorm for an hour with the data and our new ideas
    • Focus on pen and paper step since we are at the very beginning of our process.

Open ended brainstorming
  • If we had more time and money:
    • Focus on more museums and more user groups
    • Spend more time researching, observing, and interviewing the potential users
    • Coffee budget
    • Bigger team with more versatile background
    • We would hire an entire design team… aka real designers
    • Unlimited time and unlimited resources
  • Things we will use from the theory:
    • personas
    • interviewing techniques
    • observing: shadowing
    • brainstorming: post-its
    • user-centered approach from chapter two
    • moderator script we are making on Monday
    • we made a hunt statement

Questions:
  • Can you combine two types of design?
  • What age are the kids we are targeting?
    • We can observe what kinds of kids are running around.
    • Target: kids aged 7-12 +-5 years
  • How much time will we spend on generating ideas?
    • We spend time, but we definitely need to move on and move past that. Each week we should move through a step.
  • Should we ask potential users what their solution would be?
    • We are the skilled ones, so we should be observing and seeing as designers what we think should be the best design solution.
    • It could be a last question, “Do you have any ideas to make the museum experience more fun?”

Presentation:
Petter:
  • Natural history museum
  • Target group is kids aged 7-12
  • We plan to do User Centered Design

Thomas:
  • On Tuesday we are going to go do observations and interviews using techniques from chapter 4. Some of the techniques we are using are:
    • shadowing
    • fly on the wall
    • interviews
    • giving candy
    • moderator script (to be made on Monday)
    • hunt statement

Jessie:
  • We plan to interview the children and get permission from their parents.
  • They have to experience at least part of the museum before they can answer these questions
  • Interview parents at the end
  • Then we are going to analyze the data using technique from chapter 5:
    • post its
    • personas

Questions:
Johan:
  • Can you combine two types of design?
  • How much time will we spend on generating ideas?
    • We spend time, but we definitely need to move on and move past that. Each week we should move through a step.

Alex:
  • Should we ask potential users what their solution would be?
    • We are the skilled ones, so we should be observing and seeing as designers what we think should be the best design solution.
    • It could be a last question, “Do you have any ideas to make the museum experience more fun?”
